Receive Enough Training First

Probably the best way to operate a CNC machine safely as a novice is to receive some training. You can become educated on said machinery in a formal manner and thus not pose any risks to yourself or others when operating it. Just make sure you go through enough training to where you reach a competent point as a beginner CNC machine operator.

Let an experienced and licensed CNC machine instructor let you know when you've reached said status. They can track your development via assessments. If you perform well consistently, the instructor can give you the green light to operate CNC machines in an unsupervised manner.

Make Sure the CNC Machine Is Off Before You Set up a Workpiece 

One of the simplest, yet most impactful things you can do to safely operate a CNC machine is turn the machine off when you go to set up a workpiece. You won't run the risk of getting hurt by moving parts as a result.

You may even want to make sure the CNC machine is unplugged prior to setting up your workpieces. There won't be any way the CNC machine could accidentally power on when parts of your body are extremely close to it.

Get a Recommendation For Safety Glasses

Even though some bits of your workpiece can fly toward your face during CNC machining, you can still stay safe thanks to safety goggles. They'll keep materials from impacting your eyes. You can trust the set of glasses you get on the marketplace if you get a professional recommendation.

For instance, you can ask your instructor about glasses that are proven to provide an adequate level of protection. Or you can ask a CNC machinist who's been in this space for decades. Chances are, they'll know exactly which glasses provide the best protection and hold up the best around machining environments. 

CNC machining is an exciting type of fabrication to perform on workpieces. If you want to get involved in it, one of the first things to focus on is operator safety. If you use the right gear and remember your training, CNC machining safety won't ever be something you struggle with.
